题目:Colloidal Chemistry in Processing of Advanced Ceramics and Composites

时间:2024517日(星期五),下午15:0017:00

地点:哈工大科学园C3栋特种陶瓷研究所417报告厅

摘要:

Colloidal processes are recently willingly applied in fabrication of high-quality ceramic elements and composite materials. Colloidal processing of ceramics and composites requires new, effectively working processing agents like deflocculants, binders, organic monomers, etc. The results of the studies on the synthesis and application of new water-thinnable binders and new monomers for die pressing, tape casting and gel casting of advanced ceramics and composites will be presented. The first group of the binders is based on the styrene or tert-butyl groups including the polymer chain and its’ effect on the properties of polymeric binder and ceramic-polymer composites. The second group of the polymeric binders is based on the polymers with different polymer chains including butyl acrylate, butyl methacrylate, octyl acrylate, dodecyl acrylate, and dodecyl methacrylate groups. The influence of the length of the hydrocarbon chain of acrylates on the properties of synthesized binder and obtained ceramic-polymer composites will be discussed. The authors will also present the synthesis and application of new organic compounds based on glycerol and saccharides. These compounds could play a multifunctional role in the colloidal processing of ceramic powders and composites. The lecture will also concern ceramic-metal and ceramic-polymer composites. Metal particles can be incorporated from metallic powder or precursors. The authors elaborated the composition of suspensions based on ceramic and metallic powders like nickel, tungsten, and molybdenum in the preparation of ceramic-metal composites. The key role of colloidal chemistry in the processing of advanced ceramics will be also discussed on the basis of BST-polymer composites designed for the electronic devices working at the sub-THz frequencies. Another important part of the presentation will be composites obtained with the use of 3D printing techniques such as robocasting and vat photopolymerization. The influence of the chemical composition of the selected components in the ceramic suspensions on the properties of the obtained materials will be discussed.

Dr. Mikolaj Szafran is a tenured professor of the Faculty of Chemistry at Warsaw University of Technology. He graduated from the Faculty of Chemistry at Warsaw University of Technology (WUT) in 1974. His scientific interests are mainly designing and obtaining advanced ceramic materials on the chemistry base (inorganic, colloidal, organic, and polymer chemistry) by investigating dense and porous ceramic materials with the intended physicochemical and mechanical properties and intended microstructure. These materials are dedicated to electronics, electric engineering (functional ceramics),  dentistry, fuel cells, ozonation of water and aeration of wastewater (porous materials), construction ceramic materials, etc. Now, his research work refers to the deagglomeration and sintering of nano powders, synthesis and the application of new low-toxic monomers for the gel casting process, design of ceramic-metal and ceramic-polymer composites (polymer matrix composites for dental applications and ceramic matrix composites based on porous ceramic preforms), ferroelectric ceramic-polymer composites as novel materials for tunable and flexible microwave sensors and smart materials based on the shear thickening fluids.

His achievements include 1 book, 3 monographs, 4 chapters in scientific books, over 270 articles published in scientific journals, over 350 oral and poster presentations at national and international conferences, 60 invited and plenary lectures, and 55 patents and patent applications. He was also the author or co-author of 50 of technological solutions. He promoted 17 doctors (1 person are still working on a PhD thesis under his direction) and about 130 students performed their MSc and BSc work under his direction. During his work, he held several responsible functions. In 2008-2013 he was a Head of Inorganic Technology and Ceramics Department and in 2014-2017 he was a Head of Chemistry Technology Department of the Faculty of Chemistry of WUT. In 2002-2008 he was Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry of WUT. During 2008-2015 he was Vice-Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Ceramics and Building Materials (Poland). In 2009-2022 he has been VicePresident of the Polish Ceramic Society and since 2009 he is a Member of the Board of the European Ceramic Society.  Since 2013 he has been a Member of the World Academy of Science - Class Science. He organized many scientific conferences, e.g. E-MRS, Fall Meeting,  and conferences of the Polish Ceramic Society. He cooperates with many scientific institutions in Poland and the World, e.g. Institute of High-Pressure Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xi`an, (China); National Institute for Materials Science, Tsukuba, (Japan); EMPA, Materials Science and Technology, Zürich, (Switzerland); Instituto De Ceramica y Vidrio, Madrid (Spain);  Institute for Problems of Materials Science National Academy of Science, Kyiv, (Ukraine). In 2014  he obtained the “Distinguished Award 2014 for Novel Materials and their Synthesis” given by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry & Organization Committee of Novel Materials and their Synthesis. Since 2018 he is the Consultant Professor of Northwestern Polytechnical University in Xi`an, (China). From 2022 he is the Fellow of the European Ceramic Society. He is also a Member of the Ceramic Sciences Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences for the 2015-2018, 2019-2022 and 2023-2026 terms.
