题目:Co-existence of opposite elements in one system at nanoscale leads to breakthroughs
报告摘要:
In this talk, I tend to show that very special properties or new discoveries are generated via capability to manage two completely opposite elements or phenomenon to co-exist at small scale in one system. These can be exampled from a wide range of scientific problems. Superconductivity and magnetism are antagonistic phenomena but when these are manipulated to co-exist at lattice scale a very strong pinning force is resulted to pin the magnetic fluxes, leading to high field performance of the superconductor for applications. Co-existence of carbon modified surface and untouched interior at nanoscale leads to a breakthrough in high field critical current density of MgB2 superconductors. Co-existence of phonon glass and electron crystal in thermoelectric materials achieved by multi-scale scattering resulted in an ideal state for increasing figure of merit to effectively covert waste heat to electricity. Combination of active and inactive materials in energy storage system is the best strategy to ensure the electrochemical reactivity and structural integrity. A coexistence of body insulator and surface gapless conductor has led to the discovery of a completely new class of material: topological insulator with extraordinary properties.

题目:The recent development of nanostructured materials for lithium ion batteries
报告摘要:
There is tremendous worldwide interest in nanostructured materials because their small size and special properties. The Energy Materials Research Program at the Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials, the University of Wollongong has been focused on the synthesis, characterization, and applications of functional nanomaterials, including nanoparticles, nanotubes, nanowires, nanoporous materials, and nanocomposites for clean energy applications such as lithium ion batteries, supercapacitors, hydrogen storage and fuel cells. This talk will highlight the recent development of new approaches to study the relationships between the structure and the physical, chemical, and electrochemical properties of nanostructured materials for lithium ion batteries.
刘化坤教授简介:
Prof. Hua Kun Liu is a leader of energy materials research program at the Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials, University of Wollongong, Australia. The energy materials research group has grown from one PhD student in 1994 to 30 postgraduate students and 10 full time staff and a number of visiting fellows. She has been awarded the ARC Australian Professorial Fellowships in last 17 years (1994-1998, 1999-2003, 2003-2005 and 2006-2010), the Vice-Chancellor’s Research Excellence Award for Senior Researcers in 2013. She has supervised 50 PhD students to completion. She has pblished 500 refereed journal papers, cited 13000 times, H-index = 52, 1 USA patent and 10 Australian Innovation Provisional Patents. Her research has been focused on clean energy materials. The research topics cover the materials science and engineering, and electrochemistry and applications. Her group has developed numerous advanced materials and novel technologies for use in lithium batteries, supercapacitors, fuel cells and hydrogen storage.
